You Are My Beloved; On You My Favor Rests

This meditation is based on a passage for September 21, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Luke 3:15-22

Reflection and Question: : I drove my children to school every morning, which took about five minutes depending on the stoplights. On the way, I prayed a prayer of thanks for a new day, sang a verse of a hymn of some sort and asked God to inspire my sons this day in a challenge specific to each. As each climbed from the car, I turned to say, “You are my beloved, on you my favor rests,” the words of the Holy Spirit to Jesus as He embarks upon His ministry. As you might guess, at a certain age my sons could have walked to school. They never chose to. How do you feel when these words are said specifically to you?

Prayer: Holy Spirit of God, You descended upon Jesus, declaring Yourself well pleased with Him. And You descended upon the early church, giving them power to inspire power and joy. Descend upon us, we pray, that we may serve You, too. Amen.
